Now she could see that it was no third floor they were standing on. The ground was more than fifteen meters down——and it was no fall any human could survive.
So, Cecy had to pull Lydia up, had to. She held out another hand, intending to grasp Lydia’s other hand, but heard a voice, Lydia’s, shouting over the wind to be heard, ‘I can’t.’
‘My other arm is stopping the bomb from falling. If this bomb is released, it will explode in midair as it has been programmed to do——since we have to ensure the explosion——and we will both die since we are in its blast range. And this bomb has a time limit too. To five thirty.’
She was staring down at the bomb in her arms as she said these words. But now Lydia lifted her head, and despite her words, her tone was calm, indifferent even, as if she was just stating a fact that had no connection at all to herself. And then she smiled.
Cecy blinked in confusion to the smile. It did not seem to be forced.
‘If I can have a spare hand, I can disable that easily, since one only has to press a button. But my hands are both occupied, and the bomb is far out of your reach as I’m dangling underneath you. And you can’t pull me up since you would have done so already if you could.’
