‘Then we only have one choice.’ Lydia’s smile was unwavering, entirely opposed to the words she spoke next. ‘I can press the button in midair. There’s enough time.’
‘Whatever you’re planning, you can’t——’Cecy responded to her sentence.
‘Maybe your first death will come sooner than I had ever expected.’ Lydia’s green jacket flapped slowly in the wind, like the wings of a huge bird. ‘I’m sorry for that. That shouldn’t have happened. But——’ Her gaze was clear, focused on Cecy’s.
‘It’s the only chance. Help doesn’t seem to be coming. Don’t drag it onward anymore.’
‘So, let go. If not for you, for me.’

Alberto was still inside the hotel, searching for the girl who was not there. He hoped that Lydia was placing the bomb correctly. She was always better at that than him.
She was probably cutting down a small part of the fence and adjusting the bomb at the very edge of the balcony, so that it would explode at the supposed time and place. Leaning against the wall for a second, he closed his eyes, and still felt a pang of worry.
