Merlin as the choice of first name is obvious but I wonder if he chose the last name Hermes in order get the attention of original Hermes from Adam’s organization. I mean Klein and Adam came to a sort of understanding so they’re not really enemies anymore and with the apocalypse coming he and members of the Twilight Hermit Order like Hermes would likely be willing to help Klein under reasonable circumstances.

It could be that Adam would rather get rid of Klein but is more of a spectator and won't directly interfere with people and instead try to pull strings in the background. Maybe he doesn't want to break the 4th wall as an author. However, given that Klein can use divination and the fog to interfere with mind games and authoring, it might turn into an annoying game of cat and mouse, so maybe Adam just doesn't feel like waisting time and effort.
