【FICTION】Diddy Jack's Missing Tooth(4)

Some minutes later the police found me. Mom said I’ve been missing for hours. She scolded me and hugged me, and told me never, ever “wander into uncultivated land” again.
“Sure, or the dragon’s gonna crash in my face!”
I laughed. Yes, a dragon over my head!
At first it’s just a sign, “KEEP OUT - CONSTRUCTION”. Then a truck, saws, gloves, yellow safety helmets, bricks, walls. All of a sudden the trenches were down, revealing what’s being called a “park”.

Men jogging. Women with dogs. I saw children at my age running recklessly along the newly paved roads. No no no, that’s not it. Too fast, too “human”. A part of me was torn off and given to them.
I turned away, past the white walls, past vegetable plots with rotten lettuce, past the bricks that buried the spirit of dead crow and the secret of the tooth. Through the trembling tears, I saw my dragon flapping its enormous wings, melting into the horizon.
“Many happy returns!”
