It was obvious that he wasn't, so why continue to try to give them happiness if they didn't want it? Was he doing them a disservice by trying to make them happy? Was he hurting them? Did he want to hurt them? He didn't know if he did. If he did, then why continue to try and please them when that was all he could do?
So he stopped trying. He stopped trying to make them happy. He stopped trying to make himself happy. He stopped trying to make himself feel better.
