“This is a story about a family and, as there is a ghost involved, you might call it a ghost story, But every family is a ghost story. The dead sit at our tables long after they have gone. This is a passage from the beginning of the book. I really didn’t understand the meaning of “every family is a ghost story”.I think is really strange to describe a family like this. But now, When I finished reading the book, I knew part of the reason the author described it this way.
I think the ghost is Chick’s father.
Chick’s father was not very nice to Chick in Chick’s childhood, and he even hardly ever gave his love to Chick. His father once told him:” You can be a mama’s boy or a daddy’s boy. But you can’t be both.” This decision is too big to a little boy. Chick’s father eager to let his children succeed so he let Chick to practice baseball so hard to finish his dream. To satisfy his father, he always chasing his father’s love. “ And I took every hard ball he threw, even the ones that stung my hands so badly I thought I would scream.” But when his father and mother got divorced, his father was still watch him when he was playing baseball. And he didn’t miss a game. This is strange because Chick’s father still cared about Chick’s baseball career until he left the family for a few years. I think “ The ghost “ can be understood in two ways. First, although his father left the family for a few years, he made a big influence on Chick’s mind. Second, Chick’s father watched Chick’s game in the college all the time. Chick maybe want to made a decision about to be “ a mama’s boy or a daddy’s boy”. But because of his father’s big influence, he can’t make his choice. On the other side, this because of he didn't do well in college or in baseball. Chick’s father know that Chick still has the possibility of playing baseball, so he kept on trying to make Chick go to play baseball. So I think Chick’s father is the ghost.
