His heart sank imperceptibly for a split second.
“Good, Helene. The last question.” He didn't quit, looking straight into her eyes. The latter soon looked away.
“Have you ever devoted your heart and soul, to loving a man?” He said it slowly, deliberately, for fear she might not fully understand what he meant.

But this time she answered without hesitation and even directly met his eyes.
“Yes.” Briefly, in a little apologetic tone, the answer remained the same. “I’m sorry, Owen. I do love you now, but honestly, I did love a man years ago, and I was irretrievably heartbroken for a long time for losing him.” She paused to swallow. “I’m sorry, Owen. But I just don’t fit you.”
His heart sank. His eyes darkened. He turned his back, on the edge of leaving. But he didn’t.
