Its about the protagonist Oliver tuxton, the illegitimate son of a wealthy family in the upper class. His young mother gave birth to him in the parish poorhouse and died. He led a hellish life in the workhouse. At the age of nine, he was bought as an apprentice in a coffin shop. After suffering a beating, he fled to London, and on his way into the den of thieves.
