Life had lost all his family, leaving him, last remaining alive. I don’t know how I can experience his life in that age, his disease that he had to face, but I know Fugui had learnt to respect for life, be properly alive.

To Live is so far the only Chinese film that can be compared to the classic Western blockbusters. He could have gone down in the history of human cinema with Forrest Gump, Shawshank Redemption, Gone with the Wind and so on. As Zhang Yimous early work, this film is totally different from Zhangs current films, which are so called big-budget blockbusters, thoughtless, and totally rubbish compared to today.
It was also a film that was banned from public release and has not been released yet, and because of that, many people have not seen or even heard it.
