From my perspective, the story can be concluded like it"s about a group of lonely people in a cruel world. Candy was lonely and helpless. He once had a friend, his dog, but it was killed for it was too old and could hardly survive. Crooks, the colored man, was lonley, too. Few people on the farm talked to him thus he read books and stayed alone. Curley"s wife was as lonely as them.
She had hoped to become a star when she was a tennager but she became Curley"s wife at last. In another word, she married a man she didn"t love. ... I felt sad after finishing reading the story.
《人鼠之间》是我非常喜爱的一本书,只有八万字,六章内容,短小精悍。作者是1962年诺贝尔文学奖获得者——约翰.斯坦贝克。斯坦贝克曾做过工人和记者,对贫苦人民的生存状况非常了解,《人鼠之间》就出版于1937年经济大萧条时期,主人公就是生活贫困的工人。
初次看到书名的人可能以为是有关人和鼠之间发生的故事,实则不然。书名是取自苏格兰诗人罗伯特.彭斯的第一部诗集《致小鼠》,里面有这样一句诗:无论人与鼠,再周详的计划都可能事与愿违。在20世纪30年代的美国,工人的生活状态与老鼠并无二致。他们处于社会最底层,备受欺凌,为求生存,四处做工,生命脆弱的随手一捏就会消逝。何者为人?何者为鼠?本是容易区分的物种,却在那样一个时代被混为一谈。“鼠”是底层工人的象征,书名《人鼠之间》就是对底层工人生活状态的最好描述。
