方鸿渐的一生都在维持他那所谓的书生尊严。在学业、感情、工作甚至与家庭之间愈发被动不堪。方鸿渐是庸常的，也是独特的，他更是"围城"中千千万万人的缩影。人们在围城中，没有固定形容他的词汇，只能说城里有喜有悲。
钟书先生写道：天下只有两种人，比如一串葡萄到手，一种人挑好的吃，另一种人把最好的留到最后吃。照理第一种人应该是乐观，因为他每吃一颗都是吃剩的葡萄里最好的；第二种人应该是悲观，因为他每吃一颗都是不好的。不过事实却适得其反，缘故是第二种人还有希望，而第一种，只剩回忆。
书中故事的结尾用老旧的挂钟，点出人生的悲喜无常。现在以一个旁观人的视角，发现每一个人都活的像傀儡。方鸿渐走出了他自己的围城，也不过是走进了另一个人的围城。这祖传的老钟如同时间落伍的计时机，无意间包涵了对人生的讽刺和感伤，深于一切语言，一切啼笑。
