古巴的圣地亚哥老人已经八十四天一无所获了，第八十五天，带着祝福和鱼饵又顽强地驾船出海了：他要去深海捕一条大鱼。这一次他碰上了一条足有18英尺长，比他还大的鱼，他对这条大银鱼(马林鱼)充满了赞美和尊敬，同时这更激起了圣地亚哥向它挑战的决心。大鱼与老人默默地对峙，时而把船拖向深海，时而围着船打转，时而要用掀起的巨浪把船打翻……老人与大鱼奋战了两天两夜，在这个过程中，他不断地和鱼、鸟和大海对话，不断地想或回忆往事。凭着顽强的毅力和坚强的`信念，他终于挺了过来，征服了那个庞然大物。意想不到的是，在老人将要把马林鱼拖回去的时候，大批的鲨鱼被吸引而来，争吃捆在船边上的马林鱼。已经筋疲力尽的圣地亚哥老人虽然竭尽全力与鲨鱼搏斗，但那条大鱼仍旧被成群的鲨鱼咬得只剩下一副空空的骨架。最后，圣地亚哥老人把这巨大的空骨架拖回了岸边。
