达尔文相信所有的物种都是由简单的生命单位演变而来，但最初的生命是怎么来的呢？一个不常被人提及的事实是达尔文认为它们是被创造的。在第380页，有这样的一个结论，
"Therefore I should infer from analogy that probably all the organic beings which have ever lived on this earth have descended from some one primordial form, into which life was first breathed."
这里大概的意思就是，他在经过类比以后得出结论，所有在地球上的有机生物都是起源于一个共同的原始生命，而这个原始生命则是"被吹了一口气"（breathed）而来的。
这与圣经里创世记里讲到人是因上帝吹了一口气而得到生命的写法有点相似。
在该书的最后一句话，也可以说是大结局，同样的主题再次地出现，在第384页我们可以看到，
"There is grandeur in this view of life, with its several powers, having been originally breathed into a few forms or into one; and that, whilst this planet has gone cycling on according to the fixed law of gravity, from so simple a beginning endless forms most beautiful and most wonderful have been, and are being, evolved."
