"Sometimes I get worried that—no, worried is the wrong word, because if people enjoy the ending, then that’s great. But I had always thought, when writing the film, that the ending had always veered a little more on tragic than triumphant. In terms of a lot of responses to the movie, at least from what I’ve seen, the ending seems to be interpreted as a little more triumphant than tragic.
Again, that’s not something that I’m upset about. If anything, it makes the movie more enjoyable for people, but it has been a really interesting thing to observe. I had always intended it to be a pretty dark ending.")
影片提出了命题而没有给出态度和答案(除去结尾处为烘托气氛对二人稍作美化之外)，这样的处理无可厚非。然而若非要苛求这样一部口碑之作的话，影片对于所谓“师徒关系“的探讨略失狭隘。除去片中所有冲突集中在两位主演身上，导致其他角色过于扁平以外，片中冲突和台词都过于激烈和刻意，仿佛非此不能体现师徒之间相爱相杀的复杂情愫，非极端手段不能表现极致。实际任何有过良师，或是毕其心力追求一门学问技术的人，大概都能体会，即使最平淡温和的交往，也能有惊心动魄、触及灵魂的时刻。谁说期待、失望、奋起、收获和骄傲只有在顶级的音乐学习中才能获得。在思想交流，思维相逐之时，师徒之间体验的是一种深层次的信赖和交融，难怪一些西方学者将之比喻为爱欲，因为彼此的暴露，接受和进入。但是世事如此者又何必只有爱欲可以概括，这种比喻未免有失偏颇。
