作者以“围城”做书名，也许是想告诉我们：不仅婚姻像围城，人生，生活，职业等等更像围城。其实我们一直都在兜圈子，重复的.做同一件事情;找个笼子把自己关起来，过了不久却发现那边的风景比这边跟好，于是出了这个笼子进了那个笼子。就这样的不断重复并乐此不疲。
本文以苏文纨、唐晓芙、孙柔嘉3位知识女性与主人公方鸿渐的感情纠葛为论述起点，展现了不同的人物形象：孤直清高的苏文纨；纯真可爱的唐晓芙；步步为营的孙柔嘉。
她们是钱钟书笔下知识女性的浓缩：一方面，均受过高等教育，主体意识觉醒，是女性生存空间在某种程度上的`开拓,具有进步意义；另一方面，由于自身存在的软弱性，她们无法正确把握想要的爱情，不同的命运展示相似的情感状态：理想与现实的落差。
