一行清泪于无意间滑到下巴，滴落在地。

东半球的夜空出现了一道刺眼的橙光，它的瞬时亮度超过太阳亮度的一千倍，顷刻间让整个天空笼罩在创世般的白昼中。那是“薪火”的主引擎，它正以最高功率运行。亮光不会持续太久，因为引擎很快将稳定在额定功率，并适时关火。
地上的生命呆立着、嘶吼着、呐喊着、咆哮着、流窜着。偶有幸存者意识到发生了什么，于是他们加入了末日的狂欢，怒斥光的消逝。
这是地球人类看到的最后一个白昼。
离开太阳系的启程之旅将很漫长，航行方案基本由卞羽一人制订，经过了莫罗兹的建议和调整。太空站将在系内绕大半个圈，期间将利用火星、木星、土星、海王星的引力弹弓为站体加速，站体的太阳帆也会一直展开，除了为激光器充能提供光压动力，更重要的是填充储能组。太阳帆的展开状态将保持到奥尔特星云，那里尘埃和杂质较为密集，除了碰撞光帆导致站体减速，也可能对光帆造成不必要的损伤。在穿越奥尔特云的过程中，太空站的航速将达到光速的百分之二。
