Not just the colors, also the different handwriting, the ones scrawled untidily, the big and fancy ones, the careful letters like print, or the graceful and tiny, reminding Cecy of the graduation signatures of everyone in the class before they part and go on their own ways.
She walked with Will back through the silent and vacant library. She saw Will’s name on the book, and also one called Alice, even one who has the same name as her sister Rebecca.
But she never saw two names that were the same, and there were no first names, just one word to tell each apart. She wondered why.
‘This is a place, where worlds meet, where they separate. And you are in between.’ Lydia’s voice echoed in her mind, Cecy hadn’t believed it then, but what about now?
As she carefully thought about it, how could her world have had transporting mirrors? Or a belt that would wail at the slightest touch? A brush that could draw on midair and without using ink? How could she explain the sight she had just witnessed?
