文章讲了：在一个暴风雨的夜晚，主人公桑娜在家里等丈夫回来，读《穷人》有感等了半天不见丈夫回来。她忽然想起了生病的邻居西蒙的两个孩子会不会被冻死，桑娜就跑到西蒙家，把两个睡得正香的小孩抱回了家，和她的孩子睡在一起。其实，在桑娜家已经有五个孩子啦，再从邻居家抱来俩，更是雪上加霜。过了一会桑娜的丈夫回来了，正要让桑拿去西蒙家，桑娜拉开帘子，让丈夫看，丈夫大吃一惊，读《穷人》有感……西蒙的孩子正躺在那里熟睡呢！
